Is it possible to use an external hard drive to 'convert' from Firewire to USB?

January 12th, 2009 | by Joe |

I am basically tying to figure out if it is possible to use an external hard drive to 'convert' from Firewire to USB i.e. download from my miniDV camera to my external HD using Firewire and then upload to my computer using USB…

No. The external firewire drive has no "intelligence"… unless you have one from Firestore http://firestore.com/solutions/catalog.asp?id=3

A plain external drive connected to your camcorder won't record anything from the camcorder.

If you want to try to use the HDD as the "pass through" that won't work, either – the video editing applications won't recognize that DV is trying to come through the USB port.

No, your external drive doesn't have software to allow you to transfer data to it without the use of a computer.
You would be better off just buying a firewire card for your PC…its cheap and you can bypass the double transfer you are talking about doing.
Here is a good card. Free shipping, excellent rating, etc.
