This handy video capture device is the perfect solution for anyone wishing to transfer old VHS (or even Betamax!) cassettes into a future-proof digital format, capture home-movie footage from a camcorder or even record the output from a SKY box or Freeview tuner. Obviously a video with a British bent.

My PS3 now boasts six (6) fully functional USB ports, the original four in front, and two (2) in the rear. We used the facilities of SkyFiber Inc. R&D lab for our work location as this is a seriously complex (and frightening) mod. www.SkyFiber.com Since their are no schematics or plans anywhere on the net to do this, we had a-lot of head scratching and hurdles to deal with, but in the end it worked out very well as you can see.

Basically what we’ve done is cut the data path from the internal USB controller chip on the PS3 to the #4 USB port (the one closest to the center). We then wired the upstream connection on the “external” hub to the PS3′s data output on those traces, thus tricking the PS3 into thinking there’s a regular four port hub plugged into the front. After that, we wired a downstream cable from the “external” hub back to the PS3′s front USB port. To activate the two rear USB ports we simply ran 2 pairs of data lines from the “external” hub.

All power to and from the “external” hub was handled with and old IDE HDD ribbon cable trimmed down to three wires power, negative, and ground. The results: 1. It works with no limitations 2. Anything can be plugged into the front and rear USB ports. This includes charging your Sixaxis controller, more hubs, Playstation Eye, external HDD, etc. 4. This setup is a true USB hub and I absolutely love it! I must give a BIG thank-you to jasonuscg (youtube.com for all the promotion work on the previous video, thanks man!

Check 5dmark2.wordpress.com for more details & COUPON CODE for all readers who want to buy this great device directly from the manufacturer. It is a USB Follow Focus controller that can do LOT more than changing focus. It’s compatible with all Canon HDSLR cameras. Check full details at the BLOG (URL above). This video has no sound (sorry), it’s only intended to show some operations and features of the USB controller. Also, since the LED is very bright, in this video it is not easy to see how good it actually is and how much it tells (changing colors, etc.) once you learn the controller’s operation. – Basically, on this video we did the following operations * ISO adjustment * Turn Live View mode ON (ISO, aperture, shutter speed and exposure compensation can also be changed in LV mode) * Check focus of subject “David” using zoom level function, and save focus point #1 for later use * Move the focus zone to the subject “chair”, adjust focus using the knob with the help of zoom level and save focus point #2 * Start recording video * Rack focus from focus point #2 to focus point #1 by simply pressing focus point #1 * Stop recording video * Move the focus zone to subject “David” to show that the rack focus was done properly.

Much thanks to my friend Matt for pointing this out to me. This is a method to hook up a USB device to your Play Station 3 and play .AVI movies on your TV. I have not tested out other file formats, but I suspect any MPEG format will work. Feel free to ask questions and I’ll try to find the answer. You can also use practically this same method to view pictures and listen to audio. *****As asked below, if your USB device does not show up, ensure that it is formatted in FAT32, not NTFS.*****

In this video I use Corel Videostudio X2 Pro. Please watch this video in HD in full screen. Sorry my computers slow in bits because of the capture.

IMPORTANT – You may need FFDShow to record sound. Download from here – http://free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm

Best Settings:

1. Make sure you use NTSC_433 as appose to PAL60 even if your in the UK – You’ll find out why in the video.

2. Make sure to select DVD_NTSC_HQ_16_9 or DVD_NTSC_HQ (depending on if you use widescreen or not). This is the highest quality setting the EzCap can do.

3. Make sure to select the EzCap from the drop down menu next to source. The EzCap may be known as 2 different names. – USB 2861 Device or Syntek ******* (not sure of the rest)

4. IMPORTANT – Select MPEG as the format.

COMMON MISTAKES:

1. People sometimes forget to select Composite as the input source. – The default is S-Video – you NEED to change this (unless of course, your using S-Video. – Which I don’t recommend).

2. In mine, because I have Windows 7 the Audio is identified as PCI Audio – if yours says that and its greyed out (like mine): – If the audio works – Don’t worry about it – If the audio doesn’t work – Reinstall the EzCap drivers.

3. Selecting PAL 60 as the TV System may cause the green bar at the bottom of the screen (like on the video when I select PAL 60). If you select NTSC_433 this will resolve that error.

System Specs:

If you have any lag of any sort – Audio or Video – try closing all programs apart from your capture software. If that doesn’t resolve the problem, take a look at my sys specs and see if yours matches or beats it.

Motherboard – Asus M3N78-CM Processor – AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.8GHz (x2) = 5.6Ghz Memory – 4GB Graphics – Nvidia 8500GT 1.7GB (Hybrid SLI)

Still having problems?

There are many fake EasyCaps/EzCaps floating around. Take a look at your EzCap – It HAS to say “EzCap” on it – If it says EasyCap it’s a fake – and won’t work as well or even atall. I have recommended the seller I brought my EzCap off to many people and all are happy with it.

I have several Logitech USB webcams. THey need to be placed at least 25′ from my video server and this is farther than the USB standard will suport. Therefore I need to either buy USB extenders or convert the USB to Ethernet. What is the best solution?
Really, the problem is that you’ve got the wrong tools for the job. USB is designed for peripherals in a desktop environment, and is not meant to operate over extended distances. (This is because of limitations of EM propagation on USB data lines.) That said, as long as the distance is less than 25 meters, you can buy a bunch of USB hubs, and connect them serially using 5 meter cables. This will get the job done, but it’s a major kludge. Expensive and messy. The correct solution is to use either network cameras (I like both Axis and Panasonic), or typical security-type cameras that transmit video by RF (wireless or coax). These can be attached to a network camera server.

I want to buy my friend a webcam as a gift, but given she has an older mac, the only webcam I know of that would possibly work for OS 10.4 is the Xbox Live Webcam. But again, it’s an older mac that they updated the OS on so I don’t know if they have USB2 for the webcam, what kind of cable would I have to buy to convert the USB2 so it can be plugged into a normal USB port?
Don’t get a usb webcam for an older mac! Find a firewire webcam , like the old apple iSight. (ebay) Just about any firewire webcam should work.

An all in one unit by Ion Audio called VCR2PC will quite easily capture the video off of VHS tapes into digital form up to full resolution. It is windows compatible but also will work on the mac through iMovie. This leads me to believe that it might also work under linux.

It’s very much a VHS player equipped with a USB video capture. There is a composite connection adjacent to the type B USB connector on the front for camcorders. There are two versions of this device, a NTSC and a PAL version. The PAL version has a SCART output like most UK video equipment.

For the PC there is a EZ VHS Converter software that apparently transcodes the imported video file into a mpeg 2 or mp4 format suitable for DVD’s or iPods. Price is about $200.
