This is a video of a guy (who says absolutely nothing) showing a web cam and a mess of wires on top of his keyboard. The other end it hooked up to the ethernet like usb device. Funny that he points the camera at his monitor screen giving you the infinite windows effect. cool. Lastly he shows you the other RJ45 end hooked up in the back of his computer. Interesting if you just want to just see what one of these things look like, but don’t expect an elaborate explanation of USB over RJ45 extensions. He says in his description that he tested on a 10m UTP cable. Tested with: webcamera, 3G Modem, Wireless adapter.

Any USB extension over 15 feet needs an active cable to somehow relay the USB messages and stay within specifications. One could put a hub after 15 feet and then provide another 15 cable or you could buy an active extension cable that regenerates the USB signal. Such a device actively buffers the messages because it acts as a transparent USB hub. Because of this, you’re not going to need any drivers because it enumerates as a generic hub. You can cascade up to 5 of these giving a distance of 75 feet. Expect to pay about $30.

Some of the problems people using these cables may have been do to the fact that the extension cable gets it power from the host and consumes some current just as a hub would do if it didn’t get any external power. You might want to check your bios settings if you are using theses extensions with a keyboard or mouse and having problems.

I have a VGA and USB Wallplate connection behind my TV and in other locations in the house. This is to allow me to use my PC (which is located in another room) as a monitor and home entertainment purposes throughout the house. The VGA is working no problems there but the USB is not. With no way of accessing the cable for the USB i know have to look at what is left which is the Cat 5 cable also at each point. I noticed that you can buy Cat 5 to USB extenders and i am wondering if they are any good.
You can buy a USB extender which does work well, but do beware of the length you’re running the cable. You will be losing data integrity during conversion, but I am pretty sure USB can only send signal so far…
