This is an interesting diy video that you might find interesting. I have a headset, and the microphone will not work when it’s plugged into any ordinary microphone input. It’s not a case of the plug being the wrong size or type, the microphone is an electret condenser microphone, so it needs to be powered. I made an adaptor cable, the microphone plugs into one end, the other end goes to the tape recorder (or whatever) and it has a 9v battery connection for powering the mic.

When its plugged straight into a computer, the computer provides power for the mic and this is what the headset was designed for, but I intend to use it with other stuff too. It’s also why I chose NOT to get a USB one.

A cheap & effective way to transform your favorite pair of audiophile grade headphones into a full blown headset for voice communication. Benifits include having a much larger selection of headphones than headsets. A general rule of thumb is headphones have higher sound quality and also cost less within the same range of quality. Being modular you can remove the microphone when not needed and since just velcro was used the headphones can be restored 100% to there original form. Donor headset was a Altec Lansing AHS433usb – there is a cheaper version of the same product without the usb soundcard but I think the .00 more easily is worth it to have that usb option, and you can use that usb adapter with other microphones and headphones for another project if needed.

Discuss this video with our community at www.xcore.com Join David May and Ali Dixon as they discuss the XMOS USB Audio 2 reference design. The design runs over high speed USB, which allows you to use higher quality audio, or more audio channels. The XMOS reference design can be used as is, or can be customised to build your own product by customizing the example hardware and software provided. The advantage of XMOS is that it allows for asynchronous USB which means the device can control the rate the data is sent from the host pc to the device allowing it to be the master, thus requiring low jitter clocks, and higher quality audio. By using the XMOS solution you also have a lower latency allowing for bit perfect digital audio and is powered directly from the USB connection. View the video to learn more!

Logic doesn’t seem to recognize many USB mics, and after running into this problem myself and reading about many other people in the same situation, I decided to do a quick how-to video for YouTube. This video was produced back in the yesteryear of Logic 8, so a few things have changed since then. Updated annotations will hopefully make the transition process heal up nicely… The basic process is creating a new aggregate device in the audio/MIDI utility in the applications folder. This will make your new device accessible everywhere else in your system (for the most part), as well as in Logic or whatever DAW you use. There’s a much more in-depth article on building aggregate devices here: www.apple.com But if you’re the visual type, this video should help you through the process. Check out my other videos for 8-Bit arrangements, bass playing, travel, randomness and songification. HIL YIS www.prestonparish.com

Unboxing style Quick Overview Review and Testing how well it works in Linux for a new professional Samson G-Track USB Studio Condenser Mic with Audio Mixing Interface. The device works extremely well producing high quality audio depth in Ubuntu Linux from my testing and also sounds much better than previous USB microphones used on the OSGUI Channel in the past. It only comes with an entry level cartridge, but it tracks well and has crystal clear highs, better than anything I’ve had before. An upgraded cartridge will really make it sing, and I look forward to playing vintage 78s as well.

The spdif usb audio is really standard way of communicating digital signals. Spdif can also be considered to be a set of procedures that keeps everything compatible and working together. If you have either optical cable and digital coax, they can both use spdif. You can think of it as a sort of digital pipeline between electronic units regardless of the connecting cable.

Now through this digital pipeline, we can send many different digital signals such as PCM, DTS, dolby digital. A stereo pair is usually sent as PCM (which stands for Pulse Code Modulation). If you have a digital output by coax with an RCA connector, it easy to convert this to an optical signal known as a TOSLINK connector. TOSLINK was invented by Toshiba and is pretty much an industry standard optical cable connection.

Great White North Technologies has a M-Audio Quattro USB control panel replacement for Windows Vista. The current control panel supplied by M-Audio doesn’t work in vista but the drivers do. The new program will let you change the ASIO operating mode the the Quattro to select the bit depth, sampling rate and in out configuration when using the Quattro on windows vista 32bit version. You can also select the ASIO latency when using the Quattro on vista 32bits.

This new program works by locating the Quattro driver’s ASIO settings in the registry, reading the current registry keys and allowing you to save the new values. You, of course, need admin privileges to change the settings.

Tapco Link is pretty good for the price. I’ve had no problems with it and Vista. Plus Tracktion is a great piece of software.

Tapco Link $150

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LinkUSB

But honestly I’d shell out the extra $ for a firewire interface. The faster speeds causes less latency, which gives you higher quality. Either the Tapco Link Firewire ($200) the PreSonus Firebox ($300) or the TC Helicon Konneckt Live ($400).

Yes, an audio interface is essentially a powerful soundcard… in a box! I assume you're looking for something to record with?

While it works 'okish' most of the time, USB isn't really the best protocol for audio. Firewire is generally considered better.

If you have firewire on your computer then look for firewire audio interfaces, otherwise I would recommend the PCI version of the 0404 (ok, so this is a soundcard, but they're like the same thing!).

Other products to look at…

- Anything M-audio…

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=FWinterfaces

http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=products.family&ID=USBinterfaces

- Edirol FA-66 and FA-101

- Presonus Firebox

- Motu UltraLite

http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite-mk3/

WARNING: Audio equipment can get addictive and expensive! I started off less than a year ago with an Edirol FA-101, and now I have a home studio set up with a Moto 896 + Behringer ADA8000 giving 16 inputs. Great for live recording.

I do not want to go out to a default audio adapter, I only want to send audio to USB audio adapter

Go into your Windows Control Panel. Double click on the Sounds and Audio Devices if you are in classic view. Category mode you have to click on the sounds, audio, video device settings first.

You will see an audio tab, click on it.

There will be a Default device heading, use the drop down box to select the USB device if it is setup correctly.

You cannot do this on the fly, so if you are trying to switch while in the middle of a program, it will continue to send it to the first device selected. You will have to exit and restart the game/program first.
